EU Policy and Legislation
The Industrial Emissions Directive sets EU rules for the prevention and control of pollution from industrial activities.
On 5 April 2022, the Commission submitted a proposal to revise the Directive. The proposal would change aspects of the permitting process, in particular the setting of EU-wide environmental performance standards (Best Available Techniques) in relation to air, soil and water emissions of harmful substances.
The industry stresses that the key steps of the life-cycle of batteries (processing of non-ferrous metals, production of metal oxides, production of other types of chemicals, waste treatment) are already covered the Directive. Changes in permitting conditions should be carefully targeted and not lead to further delay in the issuance of permits or regulatory uncertainty on the corresponding requirements.
