e-Mobility Creates Buzz for Batteries

EUROBAT, the European Automotive and Industrial Battery Association, reports that e-mobility and the electrification of the car platform is leading to a substantial momentum for the battery industry. Numerous debates and events are taking place all over Europe. More specifically in Brussels the major topics of interest include the state of development for existing and future technologies, standards, interoperability, sustainability and overall batteries’ contribution to a greener environment in the EU.

EUROBAT is being requested to speak at events, contribute and participate in EU-funded projects to comment about the role of batteries in the (plug-in) hybrid and electric vehicles. EUROBAT joined the External Stakeholder Board meeting of the major Green eMotion project coordinated by Siemens as part of the EU Green Car Initiative. Secretary General Alfons Westgeest said: “Our association is very pleased to be part of this important 4-year project analyzing the deployment process of these vehicles, charging infrastructure and public acceptance in over 10 cities across Europe. I took the opportunity to propose our input with leaders for Working Parties on Battery Testing and Dissemination of Project Results”.EUROBAT is also part of the Board of Advisors to the EU Project named ELVA (Advanced Electric Vehicle Architectures). This project will focus on the development of three detailed vehicle concepts and to undertake the respective qualitative assessments.

At recent conferences in Brussels hosted by the Parliament, Commission and the automotive industry, the questions raised include: Is the current technology ready for a market uptake of electric vehicles? What are the main economic or political barriers? Which materials will be available as critical resources in response to market demand? What are best battery technologies? How are batteries tested, and how to monitor the State of Charge?

These are some of the issues generating interest among policy makers, project leaders, standards organisations, press and general society. To respond to all requests for further information, EUROBAT is currently preparing a Position Paper on how batteries contribute to develop electro-mobility, including micro, mild, full, plug-in HEV and EV. This document is being prepared in the framework of a EUROBAT Taskforce within the Automotive Battery Committee. The paper is planned for release in summer 2011. EUROBAT believes the buzz will lead to increased investment in the continuous development of all battery technologies.

EUROBAT also notes a strong interest in the development and delivery of industrial batteries for storage of Renewable Energy Storage and their role in electrical smart grids.
